TITLE
Like the film it announces, the title makes use of archival, crime scene and personal photos of the victim in a photo-realistic tableau. The type was lifted from the victim's personal diary but reconfigured for the film. The photo-realism and hand-craft plays throughout the graphics and effects. COURTROOM SKETCH
Little courtroom footage was available so an illustrator, Sven Johnson, was hired to create faux courtroom sketches. To get the viewer deep into the action I used the illustrations to create these parallax camera effects, sometime called multi-plane. Click here to open a sample sketch movie in a new tab.(3.8Mb) -

CourtRoom and PowerPoint
Due to a lack of courtroom footage, I recreated and composited many scenes such as this one. The screen and Powerpoint are recreations, the crime scene photo is the real thing.

COURTROOM VIDEO
Another recreated scene this one showing the prosecution's use of a documentary to make the case for capital punishment. This entire wall of Judge Ito's courtroom had to be created in Photoshop.
-
Type Treatments
Sample of the typography guidelines and templates from the entire film.
-
Faux News Clip
Mock headlines, from real news articles, were created to illustrate incidents of wrongful convictions in capital punishment cases in recent years.

More photorealistic effects, a few tabletops such as this were created using only images and After Effects 3D camera and effects.

Credits
The overall branding of the film was a balance of gritty realism and artistic intent. The credits reprise the courtroom sketches but a simple 2D backgrounds.

Packaging
This jury box illustration became the standard bearer for most of the packaging created for the film which included; one sheet, DVD box and disc, mailers and a poster.
